This Privacy Policy explains how SmartGenEduX(“we”, “us”) collects, uses and protects information when you use Vadama Samskritam(“the App”) at vadamasamskritam.com. We have built the App to be private by design: the V1 experience is anonymous, and we collect the minimum needed to deliver the spoken Sanskrit practice you came here for.
1. Information we collect
- Voice recordings (transient). When you tap the microphone, the App records a short audio clip in your browser and sends it to our server only to be transcribed by OpenAI Whisper. The audio is processed in memory and discarded after transcription. We do not store the audio file.
- Transcripts (transient). The text returned by Whisper is passed to our guided-answer logic to grade your response. We do not permanently store individual transcripts in V1.
- Onboarding preferences (on your device). Your chosen goal, gender form (for Sanskrit grammar), and level are saved in your browser's localStorage under the key
vs.onboarding.v1. This never leaves your device. - Account information (only if you sign up). V1 is anonymous and does not surface a sign-up screen. If accounts are enabled in a later release, we will store your email address, a bcrypt-hashed password, and a display name on our database.
- Operational logs. Our hosting provider (Render) records standard request logs (timestamp, path, HTTP status) so we can diagnose failures and keep the App responsive. Logs do not include your voice or the transcripts of what you said.
2. What we do NOT collect
- We do not collect contacts, photos, location, or device identifiers.
- We do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers in V1.
- We do not sell or rent any information to anyone.
- We do not store your recorded audio after transcription.
3. Third-party processors
To make the App work we send your audio and transcript to the following processors. They handle the data on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy commitments:
- OpenAI — Whisper (speech-to-text), GPT-4o-mini (free-talk response), and the TTS voices that speak Sanskrit when a human recording is unavailable. Per OpenAI's API policy, API inputs are not used to train their models by default.
- Render — hosts the App. Receives the encrypted HTTPS request payloads while routing them to our service.
- Neon — the PostgreSQL database used for accounts and (in future releases) per-user history. Empty in V1 unless you sign up.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
The App does not set tracking cookies. The only client-side storage is the localStorage entry described above, and a service worker cache used to make the PWA work offline.
5. Children
The App is suitable for learners of all ages, but accounts (when introduced) will be intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, contact us and we will delete it.
6. Your rights
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (India), and equivalent laws elsewhere, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request correction or deletion.
- Withdraw consent for any optional processing.
- Lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India.

7. Security
We transmit all data over HTTPS. Passwords (when accounts are introduced) are hashed with bcrypt — we never store passwords in plaintext. Access to production systems is limited to authorised SmartGenEduX engineers.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the App evolves. Material changes will be announced inside the App and dated at the top of this page.
