Spoken Sanskrit App — practise the language by speaking it

Vadama Samskritam is a calm, guided Spoken Sanskrit app for adults who want to actually speak Sanskrit — not just read grammar tables. Listen to a question, answer aloud, get gentle feedback, and move on.

Why a spoken Sanskrit app, and not yet another textbook

Most Sanskrit resources hand you Pāṇini before they hand you a sentence. We took the opposite approach. Vadama Samskritam starts with a five-question conversation — your name, your family, your work — and grows from there. You hear a clear, natural Sanskrit phrase. You speak it back. You hear yourself being understood.

Every lesson uses native-recorded human audio, never robotic text-to-speech. Feedback is calm: a saffron lotus glyph instead of a number score, and a teacher’s reply in Sanskrit (साधु — well said; पुनः प्रयासं करोतु — try again, gently).

How the practice loop works

  1. Open the app on your phone or laptop — it runs in any modern browser.
  2. Pick a lesson: स्वपरिचयः (self-introduction), व्यवसायः (profession), परिवारः (family), and more.
  3. Listen to the question. Press the microphone. Answer aloud in Sanskrit.
  4. The app evaluates your answer against the expected pattern (semantic, not just keyword) and replies with a Sanskrit teacher’s phrase.
  5. Repeat across 5–7 questions. Five lotuses on a lesson means you’ve nailed it.

Designed against the AI-tutor noise

No XP bars, no streaks, no leaderboards, no synthetic praise. The app rewards calm, repeated speaking practice. The interface is deep-indigo and saffron-gold, with a single focused question on screen at a time — built so you can practise on a crowded train or in a quiet morning corner.

Questions learners ask

Do I need any prior Sanskrit knowledge to use this app?+

No. Start with स्वपरिचयः (self-introduction) — you only need to speak your name, your work, and your family. The app teaches the sentence patterns as you go.

Does it work on mobile?+

Yes. Vadama Samskritam is a Progressive Web App. It installs to your home screen on Android and iOS, works offline for already-loaded lessons, and uses the phone microphone directly — no separate app store download.

How accurate is the voice scoring?+

We use Whisper for transcription tuned for Sanskrit terminals (visarga, anusvara) and a semantic scorer that compares your answer against an expected pattern. Hindi or English answers are correctly rejected; minor Sanskrit pronunciation variants are accepted.

Is the app free?+

Yes, the core lessons are free. The optional Patron Membership at ₹49/month unlocks the Patron-only stories and supports new content. One-time Patron Contribution is also available — no auto-renew.

Is there a typing-only mode?+

Not yet. Vadama Samskritam is deliberately a speaking app — every lesson asks you to use your voice. We may add a silent mode for noisy environments later.
